Workshop Renovation 2005

August 01, 2005

Still working in the kitchen.  This morning I cut in the hole for the outlet, but due to decreasing vision (cataract surgery coming soon !), I misjudged the size of the outlet box and cut the hole a little big.  Attempted a repair this evening ... will see if it works after a few more coats of joint compound and a lot of precision sanding !

Moved over a bit from the kitchen work to the dining room.  Going to attempt to install two lights in the closets on one side of the area.  Below you can see the hole cut for the electrical box with two wires ... one coming from a new switch to be installed and one going to the next light.

This is the light fixture partially installed.  The wiring has been done here and I just need to mount the fixture and place the cover back on.

Below is the new switch.  You can see the white area where the old switch was, but this location makes it more wheelchair accessible.  I had to cut a hole in the wall to access the existing wire and move it over to the next wall cavity.  The other hole to the right is from a previous installation of an outlet in the living room on the other side of this wall.  Both will be covered up by paneling and chair rail.

This is a close-up shot of the new switch.  The switch on the right will operate the new lights in the closet.

Here is a photo of the existing wire that I had to move and pull up to the new electrical box.

And here it is all put back together:

Finished installing the dining room lights today.  First I had to go into the attic and drop the wire near the electric panel.  See the dark and gloomy end way off in the distance ?  That is where I had to run the wire, drill a hole above the electric panel, and drop the wire.  Although I frequently hear snakes crawling around in the insulation up here, I didn't run into any this morning !

Below is the electric panel ... the new breaker I installed is the fourth one down on the right side.  Yes, I cut off the power before I reached in !

Below is one of the two lights I installed.  They both look the same, so I won't show you the other one !

And this is the finished product ... first with the lights off, then with them on.  Makes a difference !
